When you find out your child may need a pediatric surgery, you will most likely feel overwhelmed. It is a stressful time in any family when this comes to pass. You will have a lot to worry about, and you definitely don’t want to add financial stress to that mix. There are some things that you can do to help the stress that is sure to come, by eliminating some of the financial problems ahead of time.

Whether you are worried about paying the bills while having a child in recovery, or you are trying to figure out how you will pay for the surgery itself, there are many things to think about. First, you will want to consider how to save a little money.

Auto refinance rates are great right now. Consider refinancing your car to save some money each month. On top of that, you could also look into refinancing your home. Though an auto refinance is much easier to get, a home refinance can save you just as much, if not more, each month.

Cut back where you can. Many people find that they eat out more often than not. See if you can cut this back for a few months to save up a little money.

If cutting back and saving on your bills just isn’t cutting it, you may want to consider getting a second job. Though this can be stressful in and of itself, you may need to consider at least a part-time job to keep the finances straight, and not become too strapped for money.

Consider your flex account. Many companies today offer flex spending accounts, and since this money is tax free, and supposed to be used for medical expenses, you will find that it can be very helpful in keeping out the financial stress of a surgery.

How you mentally prepare your child for surgery will largely depend on the age of the child. Some children are too small to understand what will be taking place. Others are older and mature enough to have everything explained to them. Many children who have surgery every year fall somewhere in the middle of that spectrum. These children are old enough to understand that something’s taking place, but they might not be ready for full disclosure – especially where the risks of surgery are concerned. If that’s the case with your child, it’s important to give him age-appropriate information.

Children are smarter and more intuitive than most people think. With that in mind, they are also still very young and they may be frightened about the prospect of surgery. After all, many adults are nervous and apprehensive when they know that they must have surgery – even if the problem is a relatively minor one. It’s better to avoid discussing the risks of surgery with young children. Answer their questions honestly, but with an upbeat attitude that minimizes worry. A child doesn’t really need to know that he could die from surgery, unless the child is old enough to truly understand what that means and why the surgery is still necessary.

If you aren’t sure how to best talk to your child about his upcoming surgery, it may be better to talk with the doctor so that your child’s questions can be answered. You’ll get a better idea of how to present things to your child that way, and the doctor can answer the harder questions. Pediatric surgeons are well-versed in how to help a child work through the anxiety that he’ll be facing when surgery is getting closer. Don’t underestimate how helpful the doctor and his staff can be in making your child feel better.

A baby’s birth is always is a special occasion. It always brings out the best in all the family members. Old disputes and fights are forgotten and people get together. However, it is also a very sensitive and delicate occasion. It is very important to take care of the newborn’s health properly.

Remember, the infant is very sensitive and vulnerable to risks that adults can manage without any difficulty. Even a few drops of water on the head of the child, is sufficient to lead to a full blown pneumonia. In such a scenario, you have to be extremely careful and vigilant.

It is advisable to establish ground rules to protect the child’s health. Make it a point to enforce these rules without any exceptions whatsoever. Have your parents stay over just for the sake of enforcing these rules. Set the time during which visitors can meet the baby.

Do not treat the baby like a pet dog which can be touched, fondled and lifted by all and sundry. For the initial few months, make it a point to let others touch the baby only after they have washed their hands and feet. You can encourage your guests to use your washing area but make sure that nobody touches the baby without adequate precautions.

Try to cut down on the presence of chemicals in and around the baby. The child is very sensitive to artificial substances. From mother’s milk to the choice of toys – try to keep everything natural to the maximum extent possible.

Finally, try to be financially prepared for emergencies. Make it a point to opt for health insurance and pay your premium on time. This will help you access emergency medical facilities without any worry about the financial aspect of treatment. Taking care of the child’s health is easy provided you take necessary precautions in advance.

The age of the child is an indicator as to what diseases that a child can suffer. One of the common problems in the Pediatric age group is the traumatic problems. There are many children who are injured in various accidents inside and outside the house. To prevent these accidents and to make sure that these children are protected and saved from various dangers, excessive care is needed.

Parents should be the people who take care of the children. This is because, usually they are the most responsible people. If they are not able to take care of the child, then some other person in the family, who is also responsible, should take care of the child. This will make sure that the care that the child gets is effective. This will prevent the child from getting any Pediatric problems. The common problems in a very young age could be diarrhea because the child has eaten something from the floor. Adequate care will help to overcome this problem.

Other than the diarrhea that is a Pediatric risk in small children, there can also be other risks like falls and injuries that can also be prevented if the care giver is very careful. It can be frustrating for the care giver because of the constant care that is needed. This is the reason for the person who is the care giver to be a very responsible family member.

The Pediatric population is a very vulnerable population and so there should be excessive care that is given to the children. Though some people may think that the child needs all the attention till about 3 years, the child may need care even after that age. In the modern world, the risks abound for the pediatric population and so a lot of care is very important for the child to prevent diseases and injuries.

The common problem that occurs in the pediatric population who has gone through a difficult labor process is the presence of cerebral palsy. The problem is a very grave one because of the various complications that can occur in the pediatric population. The child who is affected by this problem, which may be incurable, needs a lot of care and attention. Many parents are not able to provide such care to the child.

The pediatric population who are suffering from the disease needs a lot of physical therapy in the early stages. After a few years, when the child has been able to learn some repetitive movements, then the child can be taught by the occupational therapists to start on some vocation. This will help the child to have a meaningful life.

It is very important for the health care professional to plan for the health care of the child as soon as the child is born. The Pediatric ward may be the first place where the child is identified as having a problem as there could be some delay in the development of the milestones. As the child grows, there could be various activities that the child is not able to do and this helps to reinforce the diagnosis.

The use of Physical therapy will help the child to become more independent. The child is taught various movements; the family is also involved in the therapy that is taught in various sessions. Play therapy and pool therapy are the two methods in which the child can be taught to do the various exercises. This will help in stretching the various muscles and also strengthening them for the child to have useful movement to be possible. As the child grows, these movements can be used Occupational therapists in the creation of meaningful work that the child can be taught to do.

All the kids who are injured in various accidents are mainly in the situation because of the carelessness of the adults. It is very difficult for a child to be careful because of the ignorance of various dangers. The parents or the adult who is near the child and taking care of the child should be the person who is able to make sure that the child is very safe in every situation.

It is very important for the child proofing of the house to prevent traumatic injuries in the Pediatric population. The main reason for this is that the kids keep running all over the house and may try to look at things out of their curiosity. This can lead to problems that will even kill them.
Some of the methods that are very simple should be used to child proof the house to prevent trauma injuries in the Pediatric population. One of the best methods of preventing burn injuries in the pediatric population is to make sure that there are no open fires in the vicinity of the child. One common Pediatric injury is the burns that are caused by boiling water or other hot fluids. The adults should keep all hot liquids out of the reach of the child as this will prevent injuries in the child.

Falls and other such injuries can be prevented by making sure that there are no high places from which the child can fall. Making sure that the toys are safe, which is another important method of preventing injuries in the Pediatric population. It should be ensured that the toys are not sharp. Other than this, there should not be any small parts or loose parts in the toys that can go into the mouth of the child, if the child puts the toy in the mouth.

There are many children who suffer from Cerebral Palsy. This is a disease that was caused because of birth trauma or any other condition that caused damage to the brain of the child during the birth, before the birth or immediately after the birth of the child. This is one of the more serious complications that occur in Pediatrics.

The children may be affected because of various reasons. The process of childbirth may be difficult in some women. These women are the ones who are at risk of being affected by this disease. There are various types of cerebral palsy hat has been described in Pediatrics. The extent of the damage in the child is the bases of this division .There are many children who have only one leg or one hand affected. Their intellect may be normal .There are many other children who have near normal intellect, but their hands and legs may be affected.

The scenario is different in each child. This may cause a lot of problems to the parents when the child is growing. This is a common problem in places where the hospital births are less and mothers use the help of midwives to have the baby born. This is especially true in developing nations. The lack of adequate healthcare is the main cause of this problem.

The children who are affected by Cerebral Palsy may be having delayed milestones and also developmental problems that may persist all through their lives. This is a tragic situation and cannot be treated adequately, especially if the child is mentally retarded. Mental retardation in the Pediatric wards can be seen in many hospitals. Most of these kids suffer from Cerebral Palsy. Those with normal intellect, but suffer from this disease could be trained in a particular vocation, making them to use the residual movements that are possible.

There are various disadvantages of a person not breast feeding the child. Pediatric illnesses are very common in children who have not been breast fed properly when they were babies. The main reason for this to occur is because the breast milk has various nutrients that are very helpful for the child. It also helps to increase the immunity of the child. When this milk has not been available to the child, there is a very high risk of the child suffering from various kinds of illnesses.

There have been various studies that have been conducted in a Pediatric population that has given a result that the children who were breast fed when they were babies have a very low incidence of diarrhea when compared to the children who were not breast fed. These children who were not breast fed were not only susceptible to the illnesses like diarrhea, but they were also at risk of various infections that could possibly be due to the lower immunity power that they had.

The importance of the breast feeding to prevent pediatric illnesses have been highlighted many times, but since many women are working these days, they do not have the time to breast feed the babies each day. It should at least be ensured that the women should follow the policy of exclusive breast feeding for at least a few months till the child becomes stronger. This will not only keep the child healthy, but will also give happiness to the mother that she has been able to play a part in preventing illnesses in the child.

Immunization is a very important method of preventing various diseases in the young children The Pediatric age group is the one who are very vulnerable to get infected with various kinds of problems. This is the reason for the immunizations and vaccinations being given to these people in the age group as laid down by the world health organization.

The delivery of the immunization in the Pediatric population is such that the people use the chance to give this to the babies at the right time. There are various advantages that are associated with the use of these vaccinations. The government and he various health bodies all over the world have strived hard to overcome the presence of various diseases. The use of vaccinations and immunizations has helped these diseases to be defeated.

It is very important that every child under the age of 5 is immunized and vaccinated for various diseases. This is not only helpful for the child in the Pediatric age group, but is also very useful for the other people as the disease is not transmitted.

Some of the common vaccinations and immunizations that are given for the Pediatric age group children at various stages in their life include the vaccinations of BCG, polio and other diseases. The use of the vaccinations will help to improve the health of the society as a whole. This will also decrease the incidence of some of these diseases drastically and then finally help in the eradication of these diseases.

The immunizations and vaccinations that have been given to the Pediatric population in various hospitals have also decreased the incidence of morbidity and mortality to very less numbers. As health is provided with the use of these vaccinations, every parent should make sure that this opportunity is used and the child is vaccinated appropriately.

Polio is a Pediatrics problem that drags on into the adult life of the person. The reason for the polio to occur in pediatrics age group is not known. The disease is caused by a virus. The virus can enter the person through various routes and once it has entered the body of the child, it starts affecting the nerve cells in the body.

The person who is affected by this disease will have a sudden rise in the temperature. The fever that the person has will be very severe and can lead to various other problems too. When the Pediatrics specialist is able to identify the cause of the disease, immediate treatment is needed, but the treatment can only be symptomatic once the disease has started. The Pediatrics age group children need to have immunizations and vaccines done against the disease which is better than treating the condition once it has appeared.

The Pediatrics ward in developing nations will contain at least one patient with Polio. The disease is affected mainly in those who are in the lower socio economic category. This makes it very important for the economic and social rehabilitation of the person who is affected by the disease. The prevention of Polio from affecting the Pediatrics age group is also effected by socio economic development of the people in a place where there are cases of Polio.

Polio is a very disabling disease in the Pediatrics age group because the child who is affected will have a residual muscle paralysis that causes the person to be unable to walk. The muscles do not develop even as the child grows, leading to severe problems. Prevention should be the primary aim as far as Polio is concerned as care after the cure s very difficult in those who suffer from Polio.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in Pediatrics is a major problem because the kids do not listen to what is being said to them. They do not have the ability to concentrate on what is being said to them. The main reason for this is that there is something wrong in their brains that cause them to be unable to concentrate.

There are various problems that are associated with this problem if it appears in a child. The Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in Pediatrics will cause the child to become inattentive. The child will also become very excited and impulsive in all the work that is being done. The truth is that a lot of the children who are born these days suffer from a mild form of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder.

There are many researchers who conclude that though the Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in Pediatrics is common, the disorder may also persist and can be seen in many adults who have a mild form of it in their activities. The main reason as said is the problem in the transmission in the brain. As the brain transmits various kinds of signals, it leads to problems that could include disorders in the judgment. There is lack of planning and the person may not be alert. Other than this, there is lack of flexibility in the brain.

This Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in Pediatrics should be treated as early as possible because if the problem persists, then there could be problems with adjustment in the school and other places. This is one of the common problems in many children these days. The family history of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder can cause the disorder later on too. This makes it into a hereditary problem, though it can exist without any preexisting family history too.

For anyone who plans to be a doctor, there’s the question of specialty. Are you going to go into family practice? Surgery? Something else? Doctors who love working with children often go into the field of pediatrics. They work almost exclusively with kids, ages newborn to eighteen – although some of them will continue to see older patients because they’ve seen them since birth. Most pediatricians are very interested in helping children to grow up healthy, and they fight against things like sedentary lifestyles, poor eating habits, and childhood obesity. It’s unfortunate that so many of these kinds of problems come up, but at least there are doctors who are committed to trying to correct them.

If you’re interested in being a pediatrician, it’s important to realize that it’s a long process. Medical school takes time, and specializing in something can take even longer. You have to be very committed to helping children if you’re going to spend the years in school and incur the student loan debt to work as a pediatrician. However, once you get through schooling and into practice, there’s much you can do to help people. Showing young people and their parents how to live better lives is very rewarding.

Of course, there will also be people who don’t want to listen to your advice, sick children who won’t survive, and other heartbreak. It’s part of the life of a doctor, and something you’ll have to prepare yourself to deal with. Even the best doctor can’t save everyone, and pediatricians have to understand that they cannot save every child or prevent every disease. They also can’t control every case of bad parenting that leads to something like an injury or a chronic health problem. Making a difference, though, is still possible, and pediatrics is a very rewarding field in which to do that.

There are some methods of identifying a child who is suffering from Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In Pediatrics, the presence of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is a major problem when the child has to be taken to school. The problems related to the school include the problems in adjustment. The child may not be able to sit in one place and concentrate on what is being said in the class.

There are various other common signs and symptoms of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in Pediatrics. They are listed here. In the work given in the class, there will be a lot of small mistakes that could have easily been avoided with a little more of concentration. The child may be seen to be thinking of something else when one kind of activity is given. This lack of attention is a characteristic common sign of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder in Pediatrics.

When an instruction is given to the child, the child may not do those activities because of the lack of attention paid to what was said. The problem is not as much in other children who are considered to be normal, the child who is suffering from this problem will have difficulty in activities that need concentration.

The child who is suffering from his problem is not able to sit in one place and needs to be constantly on the move. If the child in the Pediatrics age group with signs and symptoms of Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder is made to sit in one place forcibly, then the child will start looking at other things to try and get distracted. Right from a young age onwards, the child with this disorder can be seen to be climbing various things. Though this is normal in kids, the child with the disorder will be doing this excessively.

Diaper rash is a common complication that is seen in children who are used to wearing diapers. There are various reasons for the children to suffer from diaper rashes. This is a rash that occurs because of infection. There is also an allergic reaction that is seen in these rashes. Though diaper rash can not only occur in a Pediatric patient but also in adults who need to wear diapers because of incontinence, it is most commonly seen in the Pediatric age group.

The diaper rash is actually something that is caused by a bacterial agent. This bacterium causes the infection in the skin and also causes inflammation or swelling of the skin. The child with the diaper rash may try to scratch the area where the rash is present. The reason is that the place is very itchy.

Though many parents feel that they may be the reason for the diaper rash occurrence, it is not because of the neglect by the parents at all. It is simply a skin condition that can occur in any Pediatric patient in the hospital or even a child who is taken care at home by the parents.

The diaper may be the cause of the diaper rash. The diaper may not expose the skin to the air or the diaper may have caused the rash to worsen. The rash looks like an angry red welt in the skin. To prevent the condition from worsening further, the area could be exposed. Another method that will help the diaper rash to disappear very quickly in the Pediatrics population that has it, is the application of Zinc Oxide over the area that is affected by the diaper rash. Keeping the area clean and exposed are the best methods that can help in quicker healing. If the condition worsens the child should be taken to a Pediatric specialist.

The Pediatric wards in any hospital could be filled with children crying. Similarly, children at home may also cry at times. The cry seems to be different from a cry of hunger or when the child cries for the wet nappy to be changed. When the abnormal cry is heard from a baby, then chances are that the child may be suffering from colic. This is a condition in which the child may feel full and the probable cause is the stomach pain. This condition is called as colic.

Colic is a common problem in the Pediatric age group. The actual causes of colic pain have not been identified, though there are many theories that tell about the possible causes. One of the causes that is said to cause the condition is the overfeeding of the child by the mother.

There are various signs that are associated with colic in a child. One of the main aspects that is said to help identify if the child is suffering from colic is by noticing if the child is crying immediately after a feed. The child may also cry with a high pitched voice that is very different from the usual cries of the baby. When the baby cries in this fashion, the baby may also have a belly that is distended.

Colic is a common pediatric condition and there are no appropriate treatment methods. There are only methods that will help in preventing the various problems of the child. This is by avoiding certain foods that are commonly seen to cause the colic pain in the Pediatric age group. Foods that are said to contain gases or those that cause gas formation in the stomach can be avoided. Once this is done, the pediatric children who suffer from colic pain will have less suffering.

It is always a sad occasion when a child has to have a surgical operation performed. After all, children are young enough that everything in their bodies should still work very well. Unfortunately, there are ample occasions in which this is just not the case.

While there are all manner of childhood diseases, including a suite of different cancers that can afflict a child, one of the most common causes of a child needing to have surgery done occurs when the child is in some type of accident. According to statistics, a very large number of Americans are hurt in auto accidents every year.

Most people are so busy trying to find some discount car insurance that they forget auto accidents can injure people. While saving some money is great, it may not provide enough compensation if you improperly install a child seat. That can be extremely dangerous for your child, and it is a major cause of the injuries that children tend to sustain in auto accidents. Another cause of injuries is just the normal issues that cause any kind of accident. You want to make sure that your car is in good repair, which can help reduce the potential for maintenance-related accidents.

Are your brakes good? How about your tires? Those are the parts of your car that are most likely to wear out and that will end up needing replacement before they inadvertently cause an accident. Also, most drivers with children in the car need to be more cautious. Kids are more sensitive to whiplash than adults are, since their necks are not as strong. And, while this advice will not eliminate the possibility that an accident might one day injure your kids, it will certainly reduce this likelihood. Sometimes reducing your risks is the best possible outcome.

Many parents want to do everything they can for their children. Because of that, they have trouble saying no when a child wants to do something or wants something to eat. Because of that, children today are growing up unhealthy and overweight, which can be incredibly damaging to them in later years. Many diseases that were previously seen only in adults – like type 2 diabetes and heart disease – are showing up in overweight children. Some of this is reversible with diet and lifestyle changes, but the damage may have already been done for some children.

In order to avoid those kinds of mistakes, it’s important to understand that you have to set boundaries with your children. You don’t have to give them everything that they want, as long as you’re giving them everything that they need. Allowing them to play video games all day and eat whatever they want isn’t helping them to be healthy, and it will cause them problems in the long run. Children should be in their appropriate weight range for their height and age, and they should be active. If they don’t play a sport at school or after school, it’s time to get them involved in some other activity where they move around for at least 30 minutes a day, 3 days a week.

More is generally better when it comes to exercise, but there’s a limit. The key is not to overexercise or starve your children, but to show them how to make healthy lifestyle choices that they can use for the rest of their lives. If you set a good example, your children will generally follow that example. If you don’t, than you can expect your children to have trouble understanding good food and exercise choices. The sooner you start them on a healthy life path, the better.

Pediatrics and Healthcare professionals are facing a growing concern of childhood obesity. There are three basic reasons for the increased rate of childhood obesity. Some parents believe that there is nothing they can do about their child’s obesity. They feel that changing a few dietary and exercise needs means throwing out the food they already have and replacing it with expensive organic food. This is not the case. With a few simple alterations parents can decrease their child’s weight and not have to spend an over abundance of money doing it.

The first change that parents can make for their children is portion control. This is not to say that this control only needs to occur at home. Countless parents take their children to fast food places once to twice daily. They do not order children’s sized portions but instead allow their children to eat adult sized combo meal portions. This is a Healthcare concern in adults and is definitely and issue when it filters to the children. Keep portions to a child sized amount each time. Remember, a regular sized combo meal is actually two adult portions. Imagine how much food that is for a child.

The second change that parents can make for their children is to serve them proper meals. With financial issues sometimes a proper serving of each food group is not possible. However, some parents are turning to supplement drinks as a means to appease the child while ensuring that they obtain the needed vitamins and nutrients during a day. Pediatrics professionals warn against this indulgence stating that it can cause nutrient imbalance and poor diet habits.

The third and final change that parents can make is, of course, exercise. With the growing number of gaming consoles coming out with active games such as interactive dance and sports options, there is no reason children can not get the proper exercise needed in a day. By just applying these three changes parents will see a decrease in their child’s weight and an increase in energy and health.

It’s almost something that any parent doesn’t even want to imagine. Your precious child is sick and it is not just a cold or the flu. If you are a parent that has just received news that your child has a brain tumor or lesions on the brain that need to be removed it can be quite distressing.

Although it can be hard to imagine that there is any good news when something like this happens, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. The good news is that medical advancements have come so far that the treatment and removal of a tumor or lesion is an almost routine surgery that a surgeon performs regularly.

If you are facing having a child who needs this type of surgery here are a few things to consider when choosing a doctor that is right for you and your child.

- Research. Research is the number one key to making sure that you are going with the right doctor. Look into how many surgeries this doctor has performed, how often he performs this type of surgery and a number of other factors. This will help you decide which doctor is the best for you based off of statistics.

- See how your child reacts. Your child is the one that has to deal with the doctor directly. If they are uncomfortable it will not help in the healing process. Consider seeing how your child reacts to the doctor when you introduce them. Your child’s instincts might just be the best way to determine which doctor to choose.

No matter what you do don’t allow a diagnosis like this get you down. Remember that there are hundreds of cases of this surgery being performed and before you know it you’re child will be healed, heading off to college and taking the gmat test prep before you know!

The Pediatric age group is the time when the child is very vulnerable. They are completely dependent on the parents and other adult caretakers for all their needs. This has caused them a lot of problem at times. The children are not able to have a great time because the adults may not be able to take care of them according to their needs. One such problem is the colic pain. The child seems to suffer from pain in the stomach because the child cries soon after having food and so it cannot be because of hunger.

The common methods that are helpful in overcoming the colic pain include giving less feeds for the child. This will help prevent the problem to an extent. Other than the decreased feeds, the child should be given nutritious foods that do not cause gas formation in the belly as the gas could be a cause of pain.

Foods that contain a lot of sugars may cause colic pain in a Pediatric child. This is the reason for the children not being fed various kinds of juices. Milk and milk products could also cause the colic pain in the child. Breast feeding mothers should make it a point to avoid these products as this will help reduce the incidence of colic pain to a large extent.

If the child is being given additional feeds, then the child should be given some other kinds of baby formula and tried. This may not work, but since there is no harm in trying, the child should be given the new formula as a trial. If it works, then it is a great joy to the mother and all other caretakers that the child is able to feed without crying afterward! These are some of the simple methods that can be tried at home to overcome colic.

A growing concern with parents and professionals in the Pediatrics field are the causes leading to childhood obesity. There have been numerous studies regarding this issue and with those studies there have been numerous accusations as to what leads to the issue. The bottom line is that there are three causes of obesity in children that both parents and the Pediatric Society can agree on. With the proper attention given to these causes parents, Healthcare workers, and Pediatrics professionals would see a decrease overall in the issue of childhood obesity.

The first cause is the addition of sugars to children’s diets. Some parents tend to believe that this means all sugars should be removed from a child’s diet. Pediatric Healthcare professionals disagree. In fact some doctors say that a few sugars are fine. However, many children are receiving far more than the normal recommended daily amount. In one juice box or processed snack there can be well over twenty grams of sugar. By monitoring just the sugar content in the drinks a child consumes and removing anything over five grams of sugar, parents could see a considerable decrease in their children’s weight.

Another cause for childhood obesity is portion control. Fast food resturants and pre-packaged food items are notarious for offering much larger portions than are recommended for childhood consumption. By making sure that children are only consuming a suitable portion size per meal a parent can see a considerable increase in health and a considerable decrease in obesity with their children.

A third cause for childhood obesity is improper nutrition. Unfortunatly, this is not the same as the previous two topics. Many parents are resorting to allowing children to drink supplmental nutrition drinks rather than eating proper meals. If the child does not like what is cooked for them the parent will resort to this supplemental drink. Healthcare professionals warn that this may lead to improper nutrition and obesity due to overeating of bad foods rather than eating proper foods to begin with. By monitoring these three causes parents can control their child’s weight gain easily.

Convincing children to exercise is not always an easy task. Many Healthcare professionals in the pediatric society have offered options for exercise over the years but none seem to stick. Recently, however, there have been new innovations in exercise options for children. Several gaming companies have derived ways to get even the toughest of children active and ready for more.

Parents are finding that an easy way to get children interested in exercise is through the use of gaming consoles such as the Nintendo Wii. These consoles have a wide range of fitness related games that allow the player to enter in all of their information and set weight loss goals for themselves. The games range from yoga to running and even kickboxing. They are age appropriate and goals may be adjusted depending on the age of the player.

Another great exercise for children is found in console gaming but can also be purchased for less than $20 as a plug and play game for the computer or television. The game is known as Dance Dance Revolution or DDR. Many doctors within Pediatrics department recommend the game as a good source of cardiovascular exercise. The game is easy to follow and has a calorie counter and different goals based on gaming levels. There have been reported cases of children who are morbidly obese loosing over one hundred pounds by staying active with this game.

A final option to help convince children to exercise is to set reward goals for them. Base the goals on the game that they seem to like the most. For example, if the child enjoys one of the Wii games then set the rewards according to the goals of the game. If they make it from running half a mile on the game to a full mile it is the same as if they did that on a normal track. Reward them with a non-food item or perhaps another fitness game for the console. This will keep them motivated and keep them active while still having fun.

With childhood obesity on the rise many parents are turning to not only their Pediatrics and Healthcare professionals but also to the gaming industry. The console gaming industry is turning out new and innovative ways for kids and adults to get involved with exercise. Games are geared to activities such as bowling, running, yoga, and cardiovascular workouts and goals are set with levels just like normal games. One of the highest acclaimed consoles for this style of exercise is the Wii Fit.

The question is are there any real benefits to using the Wii Fit for combating childhood obesity. Many Healthcare providers say yes there are. One of the main benefits of using this console for exercise is that there are so many options to keep the child’s interest. There is bound to be a sport or activity that even the pickiest of children will like. The games incorporate the exercise into moving backgrounds and give a virtual reality style feel that appeals to most children and keeps them interested.

Another great benefit to using a gaming system for exercise is the built in goal system. A lot of children work on leveling when they play video games. Each one of these games is geared to leveling your character through the exercises they do. There are built in goals that are required in order to reach each level. These leveling goals give the child a challenge that is within the game they already enjoy. The more they level the faster they loose weight and get in shape.

A final benefit to using game consoles for exercise is a benefit for the parents. With the high cost of day care and school sports programs it may be impossible for parents to afford to enroll their children in activities. Many parents do not feel comfortable with having their children away from home either. This form of exercise is relativly inexpensive and keeps the children near the parents for full supervision. It really is a winning situation for both parent and child in fighting the battle over childhood obesity.

Children need goals and they need to be rewarded for those goals. The pediatric society of Healthcare providers encourages many parents to offer rewards to their children for weight loss and exercise achievements. The key factor with these rewards is that they be positive rewards that are non-food related. Rewards can be affordable and fun with just a little bit of time and effort.

One of the best non-food rewards for reaching goals is something that many pediatrics offices use daily. Fill a box or bowl with several small toys or reward slips featuring an event that the child enjoys. When the child has reached their goal let them choose something from the box or bowl. It is very similar to the concept that pediatrics offices use after an appointment to reward the child for good behavior. If it works there it will work at home as well.

Trips are another great non-food way to reward children. Plan an outdoor trip to the Zoo or Park. There are several cities that offer free movie nights for families as well. Pick a location and trip and offer that up as a reward for major goals that are reached. This will keep the child motivated and let them know that good behavior and meeting goals does actually pay off in the end. They will not see the goal as enough of a pay off in many cases but they will see how much fun the family outing is immediately.

A final non-food way to reward children for goals is by allowing them to have a day off from chores. Everyone needs a day off and giving the child a complete day to be prince or princess for the day is an awesome way to give them a reward. Pediatric counselors and other Healthcare professionals will encourage giving the child responsibilities but also say that letting them have a small break from them let’s them know that they are being appreciated and that their efforts are worth the time.

The idea that your child will have to have surgery is scary because it can be difficult if not impossible to work up the courage to speak to a young child about the pending surgery. Preparing your child for surgery, however, is one of the most important things that you can do when your child has to have a procedure. There is a level of both physical and mental preparation that your child needs to undergo. Your child needs to understand what will happen prior to and during the procedure.

Your surgeon may be willing to participate in helping you explain the surgery to your child, but ultimately, you are going to be the person who is responsible for explaining to your child what is happening. You will have to convey this information in such a way that he or she will not be terrified by the road ahead. Children will generally require far more physical and mental preparation before surgical procedures than adults. This is because children tend to be more easily confused when it comes to the information that they receive. Don’t be surprised if your child has lots of questions and even asks the same questions repeatedly.

On top of needing to explain the procedure to your child, you should also walk your child through the basics. Tell your young son or daughter that you have packed his or her baby clothing, favorite toys, favorite foods, and whatever else will set the child’s mind at ease. Discuss the fact that the child will “go to sleep” and that upon waking, you will be there. Explain things in terms that your child understands, and try to be soothing and supportive above all else. Your child needs to know that everything is going to be okay and that you are willing to answer any questions about the surgery.

Helping children loose weight is a constant struggle for parents, the pediatric society, and Healthcare administrators. With fast food, pre-packaged meals, and junk food it can be difficult to turn children to a healthier lifestyle. Convincing children to exercise, however, may be easier for many parents thanks to plug and play and console fitness games. These games are affordable and will keep children interested while loosing weight and staying active.

There are three very popular styles of home fitness games. The first is the widely played DDR or Dance Dance Revolution. This game has been chosen by several Healthcare professionals as a wonderful way to get children off the sofa and moving. The game is offered in plug and play PC, television, and gaming console options. All the child needs is a dance mat and the game. Free options of the game are available for legal download online and parents can even adjust the settings to fit their child’s needs.

Another immensily popular home fitness games are plug and play sports packages like the Zone. The Zone is an all in one gaming console that costs less than $50. Parents can set the console up just like any other gaming console and children can begin playing immediately. The games range from yoga to running and keep the children moving all the time. Many Healthcare practitioners offer this option to parents who may have limited budgets or have children enrolled in homeschool programs that still need a fitness regimen.

A final option for home fitness games is the Wii Fit. The Wii Fit is incredibly popular, however, it is a bit expensive. This gaming system and the fitness packages offered within the system are a favorite of many Pediatrics professionals as they have set goal systems, team play, solo play, and can get the entrie family involved in the fitness program. All three of these options offer affordable and easy ways to get children moving and help them to find childhood obesity.

Parents would do anything to make sure that there childrens health and well being is first and foremost. There is nothing more painful for a parent that seeing their children overweight and suffering socially and physically from that illness. With all the answers from Healthcare professionals and the pediatric society as a whole it is still not enough. Many parents still have problems getting their children interested in activities that will help them be free of obesity.

One of the many forms of assistance that parents have looked toward is a game that began in Japan and has swept through the world at an alarming rate. The game is called DDR or Dance Dance Revolution. The game is truly revolutionary for many parents and their obese children. It is designed around constant movement. Children have to be active in order to level and successfully play the game.

The game consists of either a plug and play television adapted dance pad or a console dance pad for any number of the current gaming consoles on the market. The game has several options that range from beginner to advanced user interfaces. There are options to track calories burned, fat burned, and there are even options to set up songs from the built in play list and to create a personalized workout of up to one hour.

Leveling in the game is done through getting the correct steps and the correct times. As the levels increase the speed of the game increases. Many children do not even realize that it is actual exercise which is a real selling point for many parents. Through daily use of the game and advancement through the levels children can become more active, loose weight, and begin to feel comfortable around their peers without fear of being ridiculed for their weight. That alone is a precious gift and huge benefit for many parents trying to fight childhood obesity and it’s many risks.

Holistic medicine and alternative practices are often thought to be for adults only. Holisitics, however, has moved into mainstream Pediatrics. Holistic Pediatrics is a branch of medicine within the pediatric society that is concerned with natural remedies for children. Parents who are supporters of Holistic Pediatrics generally become supporters through fear of pharmaceuticals causing adverse reactions in their children.

Holistic Pediatrics has been around since the dawn of time. It has only recently, however, been given a defined name. The main separating factor between regular mainstream pediatrics and holistic pediatric practices is in the method that medicines are manufactured and what the ingredients are. Holistic practitioners tend to offer medications that are natural or organic. There is no animal testing and no pharmaceutical chemicals within the medication. Many parents feel that these factors are vital to their children’s Healthcare plan.

There is a belief that has spread both on and offline amount parents and holistic communities. This belief is that pharmaceutical chemicals can help at first but over time they will cause a build up in the child’s system. This build up causes an immunity to the medication and leads to the evolution of diseases that normal medications will not work on. To combat this parents use natural and organic remedies that are not habit-forming and do not allow a build up or immunity to form.

Mainstream Pediatrics is divided on the safety of these medications. The general consensus seems to be that the issue does not come with the pharmaceutical chemicals but comes from giving the child double medication or the medication to often. There is also a belief that doctors should take more time with patients to ensure they are medicated the child for the proper illness. Regardless, parents should educate themselves before moving from mainstream to holistic pediatric practices.

When you think of running a 10K race, what comes to your mind? Running and listening to an MP3 player? Running through long stretches of boring scenery? Having a tired, sore body, and aching feet? Wishing you were at the finish line when you are only half-way along the route? These thoughts will never enter your mind when you run in the Nike City 10K race on October 24.

The race, held in Singapore, winds along a scenic route. It starts at the Marina Bay Floating Platform (that is slightly larger than a soccer field). It goes past the Singapore Flyer, which is the world’s tallest Ferris wheel. It is 42 stories high (541 ft) and towers over a three-story building that houses restaurants, gift stores, restaurants and bars. The view from the Flyer extends across Singapore and out to the Indonesian islands in the bay.

From there, the race passes the Formula One pit building that is home to the nail-biting, intoxicating F1 Singapore Grand-Prix race. The ground floor houses 36 garages for the 12 racing teams. The second floor has the Media Center (that has capacity for 4,000 guests), the race control center and the winner’s podium. The top floor has hospitality lounges and an open rooftop terrace for a bird’s eye view of the race.

In addition to these impressive sites, the race planners have created four entertainment zones along the route where local bands perform for racers and those watching the race. One zone features classic songs from the 1960s through the 1980s, one performing hip-hop, one playing retro style music and one performing pop rock.

Can your Nike shoes be running shoes AND dancing shoes? Hopefully so because at the end of the race at the Republic Avenue tunnel, runners and dancers can boogey to the music of a band playing a variety of music styles.

Healthcare and Pediatrics professionals around the world have discussed the benefits of yoga for years. The problem is that many parents view yoga as something for adults and do not see how it would benefit a child. Despite this misconception, there are several benefits to the practice of childhood yoga. Is has been stated by Holistic Healthcare professionals that the benefits of childhood yoga may help with symptoms of ADHD, Autism, and childhood anxiety.

A major benefit of childhood yoga practices is the stress and anger relief it offers. Yoga is a calming and focus rich fitness option that offers a quiet meditative environment. Children are encouraged and find themselves focusing within a few minutes. For thirty minutes to an hour the child can focus on something other than the stress and anxiety they are feeling. Many parents have reported to their Pediatrics professional that children seem calmer and able to withstand daily stress after consistent yoga practice.

Another benefit of childhood yoga practice is lean muscle growth. Yoga is designed with stretching and meditation in mind. The stretching exercises are held for several seconds to several minutes. This stretch time allows for the muscle unit to stretch out and hold that position. This promotes lean muscle development and also burns fat.

A final benefit of childhood yoga practice is in the activity itself. Offering a child a fitness practice that helps with stress, promotes muscle growth and lean muscle mass, and allows for ongoing fitness activity is priceless. Many parents have reported that children are not only calmer but that they also show signs of weight loss and better overall health. There are more benefits to childhood yoga practice, however, these three benefits alone make all the difference in the world when trying to keep children active and calm.

A growing controversy in the area of pediatrics are vaccinations. Vaccinations became widely used during the 1800s smallpox outbreak. Over the years the number of vaccinations grew in accordance with the number of fatal childhood illnesses. There is an argument among parents that the number of vaccinations children are receiving is unnecessary and causing more illnesses than they prevent. A growing community has emerged to educate parents and to stop the number of vaccinations and in some cases stop vaccinations altogether.

So, what is a vaccine? What vaccinations should children have and by what age? What is the success rate of vaccinations in preventing illness in the world’s children? Vaccines are simply medications or mixtures of medications with small amounts of a virus that are injected or ingested by a patient. These medications are designed to build immunity to the virus they are treating. They have progressed over the years from five vaccinations to over fifteen vaccinations. An increase in fatal illnesses is cited for the increase in pediatric vaccinations.

There is a general consensus among within pediatrics that children should be vaccinated for Tdap, HPV, Meningococcus, and Influenza. These vaccines should be followed up, over a scheduled amount of time from infancy to eleven, with MMR, Hepatitis B, Varcella, Polio, Hepatitis A, and Pneumococcus. Parents opposed to vaccinations claim that all but two or three of these vaccinations are needed. Some even argue that none are needed and that their parental rights supersedes the rights of the medical community and government to administer the vaccines.

The success rate of vaccinations in preventing illnesses speaks for itself in the bodies of healthy children across the world. Though there have been isolated cases of the vaccinations not working or of children being allergic to the vaccinations there is no scientific evidence that they harm the children they are designed to help. As with any medical issue there will be opposition. When it comes to a child’s health and safety it is natural to be cautious but it is also natural to obtain the knowledge before making a choice.

With the development of pediatrics there have been developments in vaccinations. The topic of vaccinations can be daunting and confusing for some parents. It is time consuming to learn about all the vaccines, when to give them, and why children should even be taking them. However, there are several key factors that take only a few minutes of education and can help many parents make informed decisions regarding their child’s immunization schedule.

Children should be immunized using a schedule that begins within the first few months of life throughout the age of eleven or twelve. This immunization schedule can be picked up at the doctor’s office or clinic during the first visit. This schedule will make keeping up with vaccinations easy and clear. There are fifteen vaccinations that children need. These include booster shots and follow up vaccinations. Doses vary between one dose and four doses over time depending on the specific vaccine.

The pediatric society does warn that there are side effects and that this side effects are minor and considered to be normal. Fever, rash, and minor soreness are all normal. Vaccinations have been known, in isolated and rare cases, to have severe risks. For this reason it is always best to check with the physician or clinic and find out the warning signs of a severe adverse reaction. There is also a publication which will give clear warning signs so that parents can act on the signs quickly.

Immunization under the age of five is vital. Children under the age of five have an increased risk of illness due to their immune system development. Immunizations, if not started earlier, should start no later than the age of two to prevent illness. Cost can be a factor for some parents. If this is the case seek guidance from a physician in pediatrics or a clinic. There are programs to cover expenses of childhood immunizations.

Many parents have decided to prevent their children from being immunized due to increased concern and possible risk factors caused by immunizations. Though there are no laws governing immunizations and the pediatric society has no governing power over them either. Parents are well within their legal rights to deny immunization of their children. However, there are a few things that parents should know before they make this life changing choice for their children.

Immunizations for children should begin by the age of two. The ages between birth and five years are very risky due to the decreased effectiveness of the immune system. This means that if a child is not vaccinated they are much more vulnerable to illnesses. Rare illnesses are not excluded simply because they are rare. If a virus or illness is present then the child is vulnerable to that illness. Many of the illnesses are either fatal or have left lasting impressions of their presence including loss of mobility, speech, and even sight.

The education system requires immunizations of students prior to their registration and entry into classes. This is true of both public and private schools and is in place to protect children in the classroom and community from infection. Though there are no laws stating that immunizations must be given, schools can decide if a child may remain enrolled based on the students immunization record. If the school system or officials feel that there is a threat to the health of safety of other children they are well within their right to request immunization in order for a child to enter their education system.

By choosing not to vaccinate a child the parent may be putting the child at a risk for life long injury, pain, or in the worst of cases death. Lack of vaccinations may also prevent the child from attending school and school functions. Both of these issues affect the child’s normal society and educational progression and should be considered when making this important choice.

The use of midwives has been an accepted and popular practice since Biblical times. Midwives are primarily responsible for the care of a mother and child during the childbirth process. Many midwives are former or current pediatrics nurses that have taken on a separate certification specifically for midwifery. The concern within the pediatric society is not for the practice of midwifery but for the dangerous of midwives being used during high risk pregnancies.

Midwives are trained on a general level to help with low risk pregnancies and deliverers. Midwives do not carry a medical degree of any kind and do not have certification within the fields of medicine. This distinction has made many major insurance companies choose to offer no coverage for midwives during labor and delivery. Due to complications that may arise during the labor and delivery process, many pediatrics professionals feel that the use of a midwife is a bad judgment call and can have dangerous consequences.

If an expectant mother is looking for a midwife they should consider several key factors. Look for a midwife that has a degree or certification as a pediatric nurse or general RN degree. A midwife with either of those credentials will have further and more in-depth training than a midwife with only a certification in midwifery practices. Check the local state and county laws. Though it is rare there are some areas that do not legally allow midwives to practice.

As mentioned earlier, midwife services may or may not be covered under insurance. It is always best to check with the insurance provider of the policy holder to make sure that midwife and the services they offer are covered. Many hospitals and doctor’s offices also offer midwife services on community bulletin boards and forums. Remember to check with a doctor prior to hiring a midwife for the labor and delivery of the new baby.

As Pediatric Medicine evolves so do natural and alternative therapy options for children and infants. One of these developments has been in the area of massage therapy. Certification programs are available for healthcare professionals and massage therapy professionals that want to expand their learning and current certifications to help children and infants. There are a few things to know about the certification prior to seeking a pediatric massage therapist or becoming a certified pediatric massage therapist.

An important factor to keep in mind regarding Pediatric Massage Therapy is that the training is very limited. Training sessions are generally held over a two to three day period and in some cases are considered to be weekend certifications that are held at retreats or special conferences. To become a Certified Pediatric Massage Therapist this training is required. If a massage therapist does not have this certification then they are not certified for pediatric massage and have not received proper training. It is important to remember that training for basic massage therapy does not include the special considerations related to pediatric patients and massage.

Another key factor to keep in mind when either wanting to become certified or wanting to hire someone with the CPMT certification is that there is no pre-requesite for the course. A person seeking certification or who has obtained certification does not have to have prior medical or massage training. This may be a concern for many parents who would like the therapist to have other knowledge that is connected to the massage therapy session rather than just the massage itself.

This certification is offered thorughout Canada but may not be offered in local areas of the United States. It should be noted that weather someone is seeking certification or seeking a certified individual, certain laws may prohibit or not recognize the CPMT certification. It is always best to check in the local area for laws governing this type of certification and for laws governing the business practices related to the certification.

Making advancements with technology and medicine within Pediatrics smetimes means tepping back and looking at what has been done before. A back to baiscs approach, especially with children, can often be revisited and looked at from a different prospective, This is the case when it comes to pediatric massage. Pediatric massage is a technique practiced by massage therapists and certified pediatric massage technicians or CPMTs.

The benefits of pediatric massage are varied and opinions of the practice run the gammit. The benefits, however, do seem to be conentrated within children who were born premature. In fact, one of the key benefits offered through pediatric massage is geared to help premature infants with the pain and discomfort of growth. Premature infants may experience severe discomfort during their growth stages and with certain technqies a CPMT can help to ease the discomfort in joints and muscles.

In addition to offering relief for aching muscles and joints, pediatric massage also offers a spossible solution to weight gain in premature infants. There are some helathcare practioners within pediatrics that believe a crucial benefit of pediatric massage are the techniques that encourage body growth and weight gain. The techniques and training methods for this form of massage are sometimes only available to parents through a CPMT.

A final benefit of pediatric massage is the relif of colic symptoms and gas related to constipation. These benefit of pediatric massage is used widley by massage therapists for both infants and toddlers. The movement and techniques of the pediatric massage will put light pressure on certain parts of the body allowing for the gases to release easily. As the pressure releases so does the discomfort in the child. With just these three benefits it is clear why the pediatric society and community look fondly upon the practice of pediatric massage.

Parents with children suffering from ADHD are faced with a wide array of medications that may or may not help their child. It is hard to know which is best and sometimes the only solution is to trust the physician and let them take the child’s health into their own hands. Some parents, however, are looking towards alternative pediatrics and Healthcare methods to help with their children’s health issues. One of the areas that this alternative approach can be found in is in the area of natural remedies for ADHD.

Holistic Pediatrics is a growing alternative to pharmecutical health answers. When it comes to ADHD there is a growing number of Holistic professionals that feel certain steps may be administered to help combat and in some cases even stop ADHD symptoms such as attention, energy, and comprehension of subject matter. One of the first ways that Holisitic Healthcare professionals combat ADHD is by having a parent remove sugar and gluton from the child’s diet. Studies have shown that foods are containing higher and higher amounts of gluton and sugar which is adversly effecting children. Removing these two food elements may show an increase in brain stimulation and avoid chemicals that block brain function.

Another natrual alternative for the tretment of ADHD is to simply have the child tested for food allergies. To often parents assume that allergies will show in coughing, wheezing, sneezing, or in rashes along the body. In some cases, however, a food allergy may take an internal route causing blocks to brain stimulation and function. Taking a child to a nutritionist and food allergist could be a great help and answer to the problems the child is experiecing.

A final natural alternative for ADHD treatment is to introduce certain natural herbal supplements such as Ginko Biloba and Ginsing. Both of these supplments increase blood to the brain causing brain stimulation and concentration. With these three simple steps a parent may avoid chemical answers to their childs Healthcare needs and move toward a treatment plan that works best for the parent and the child.

Depression in children is an increasing issue in Pediatrics and the Healthcare community. Depression in children can be caused for any number of reasons. The treatment plans vary depending on the severity of the issues. In some cases parents have turned to alternative Holistic Pediatrics for assistance in dealing with their child’s particular depression related issues. There are several signs to take note of, however, that may make the treatment plan easier for the parents, children, and Pediatrics professionals.

Many children have moments of irritability but if the irritability seems to come on suddenly in the form of a mood swing there could be a depression related issue present. If the child continues to have this mood swing over time and if the irritability does not seem to have a known cause then a trip to the doctor would be recommended. This particular symptom of depression can also branch off into other areas such as anxiety or even food allergies. Either way the issue should be dealt with by a Pediatrician.

All children have a rebellious streak in them, however, when a child becomes argumentative and aggressive there could be deeper issues. Argumentative generally takes just a verbal form and is a sign of anything from stubborness to not having enough sleep. However, when that argumentativeness begins to lash out physically in an aggressive manner then there is more than likely something deeper going on. Just as with irritiability and mood swings, aggressive behavior should be monitored and if the behavior continues the child should be seen by a Pediatrician.

A final sign of depression in children that parents should be aware of is a sleep disorder. Changes in sleeping pattern may be a sign of depression. These changes can mean sleeping longer hours to not sleeping at all. Lack of sleep and too much sleep can lead to the other symptoms of irritability and argumentative agreesive tendencies. If any of these signs are noticed by the parent then seeking a doctor’s assistance may be necessary for the health and treatment plan of the child’s issues.

Stem Cell research is a hot topic in the Pediatric and overall Healthcare community. The only knowledge that many parents and members of the community have regarding stem cells is limited to quick blurbs on national news broadcasts. Regardless of weather or not someone agrees with the use of stem cells there are still huge medical benefits of stem cell usage. It should be noted that many of these benefits have been discovered through cord blood storage methods and stem cell research from stem cells gained through cord blood storage.

One of the main benefits of stem cells is found in the basics of what they actually can do. Stem cells can transform other cells and allow cells to regrow. This is vital in the treatment of certain illnesses that otherwise would be fatal. The pediatric society and Healthcare community have worked to embrace this benefit as an alternative to drug combinations that may not work to benefit a child going through the pain of certain illnesses.

Leukemia and inherited disorders in children have also seen a benefit from the use of stem cells. When stem cells are introduced into the body they create healthy cells. These healthy cells replace cells that are infected with illness and disease. This cycle helps with cancer and leukemia which can destroy cells causing a decrease in immunity to illness and infections. The Pediatrics community is working with other Healthcare communities to help stem cells become specific cells in order to treat more illnesses.

Spinal injuries and further research regarding stem cells benefits with these injuries is growing daily. The benefits of stem cells are evident in every medical issue that they are used with. There are even instances of the pediatric society looking towards stem cells to help with pediatric burn patients and patients with unstable growth rates and developmental rates. Overall, stem cells can be used in a respectable and accountable manner to help pediatrics and the pediatric society.

Kids are a parent’s biggest worry. From the day you were born your parents worried about every bump, bruise, cough and sneeze. And from the moment you had kids, you worried about the same thing. The difference between what your parents could do about it and what you can do about it, however, is enormous. If there is one thing today’s generation has the advantage in, it’s the quality of home medical care and home medical monitoring. There is no telling how healthy kids can now be when their parents use the available technology to monitor health.

At a very basic level, there are advancements in what kids get out of the vitamins they take. The technology used to coat the pills is some of the most advanced scientific processing and manufacturing in the world. The pills dissolve easier and are absorbed into the body quickly so they are effective quicker and for longer. This was not the case 50 years ago. Now kids are in the drivers seat as far as the minerals and nutrients they get.

Another thing kids have access to today that they didn’t have 50 years ago is a pulse oximeter. This is a device that kids can wear on their finger to tell parents how much oxygen is getting to the important parts of the body. This is something that would have taken invasive testing years ago, without any accurate results. But nowadays, this technology is easy to find at your local home medical supply store or pharmacy. The kind of world we live in allows a parent to be able to get more information about their child’s health than ever before. You have to thank technology for being able to feel safer about your kid’s health.

Cord blood storage is something that many expectant mothers hear about from their doctors. Different companies advertise to expectant mothers offering them the option of having their newborns cord blood stored in safe secure environments. Parents can choose to donate the cord blood making it available to themselves and other family members or they may choose to donate the stored cord blood to others in need or to research.

There are several benefits to storing cord blood. One of the main benefits is that cord blood can be stored for an indefinite amount of time. This means that if the cord blood is needed at a later date a parent or authorized guardian may access the cord blood. This is curcial in casees where childhood cancer has developed a year or more after birth. In these cases cord blood can be obtained and used by the Pediatrics department and Healthcare officials to help aide in it’s application for the child’s recovery.

Another benefit to storing cord blood is that it can be stored to assist in further research. With the time frame being open for storage possibilties this means that parents may choose at some point that they no longer wish to use all or portions of the stored cord blood. In this case they may choose to donate the remaining cord blood to research programs that are working to further the medical benefits of this resource.

A final benefit to storing cord blood that should be considered is its ability to help other children and adults that suffer from certain illnesses such as pediatrics related illnesses, leukemia, and injuries where cord blood can be used to grow and repair cells within the body. This benefit alone is a mircle to someone who may not have access to cord blood or who is willing to work with researchers to help their children or family member suffering from something cord blood could cure. Healthcare professionals are working hard daily to promote the benefits and research related to cord blood and cord blood storage helps in that endeavor.

Your insurance card is an awful lot like a prepaid credit card. Obviously, it does not have any particular cash value to it. And this is definitely a good thing, because some yahoo would probably try to sell it if there were. But when it comes to both your health and your family’s health, your insurance card is sort of the “keys to the kingdom” of health care. Think about how much insurance can save you, when one of your children gets sick. If they develop an infection that requires them to be hospitalized, you may end up having to pay only a tiny amount of money out of a bill in the five digit range.

And consider the possibility of what could happen if your child had a congenital defect. If something is wrong from the very beginning, your insurance could literally save their life. While it is terrible to imagine something like that happening to your baby, don’t you feel a lot better knowing that you can focus on caring for your child, instead of being afraid that you may not be able to afford the treatments they might need? When it comes to the fancy treatments our society seems to be in love with, they all cost a lot of money.

And insurance pays that money, except for your percentage and your copay. While it isn’t exactly the free health care people receive in a lot of countries, at least it’s better than having to pay cash for every medical good and service you receive. And when it comes to your children, do you honestly think you could ever even consider saying no to what they need? Your insurance card is not just the medical equivalent of a prepaid credit card – it is the ticket to a long life for your children. And it’s also a long life in good health.

Are you one of the many Americans keeping cleaning products under the sink? While this storage area seems like a good place, you may want to find a better one. In August 2010, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) released a warning to parents to lock up household cleaners. The warning primarily targeted families with toddlers, but the advice is sound for any family with young children. The AAP issued the announcement after reviewing the results of a study based on information from the Columbus, OH Nationwide Children’s Hospital. The hospital estimated that it treated 267,269 children under the age of five for household-cleaning-related conditions between 1990 and 2006.

In years past, the potential danger of young children getting into cleaners resulted in many companies changing their packaging in order to offer child-resistant products. As a result, parents may have put their faith in the packaging instead of taking precautions to lock up the chemicals. Even something as “harmless” as dishwasher detergent, laundry soap, or ammonia can send a toddler to the emergency room. The hospital reported the following statistics in its study:

~ Children under the age of three accounted for 72 percent of hospital visits related to cleaning products.

~ One-year-old children accounted for 45.9 percent of those injuries.

~ In the majority of cases, children ingested chemicals, with chlorine bleach being the number one product ingested.

~ Over 50 percent of the injuries involved little boys.

Overall, injuries related to household products decreased by 46 percent since 1990. The non-fatal nature of the injuries is also positive in light of the serious risk a child can encounter by playing with chemicals intended for cleaning. Mixing ammonia and bleach can cause a toxic gas, which could cause fatal harm. Drinking some chemicals could damage a child’s lungs. Some researchers attribute the improvement to a combination of child-resistant packaging and parent awareness regarding the potential harm household chemicals could cause. To prevent unintentional harm, lock household cleaners in an area out of a child’s reach, store chemicals in their original containers, buy child-resistant products, and properly dispose of cleaning agents.

If you have a child who has health problems, especially of the heart, lungs or circulatory system, you may have to monitor him more closely than you would other children. The same is true of a child who’s very overweight and must exercise to lose the extra pounds. One of the monitoring devices you can use to check your child’s health is a finger pulse oximeter. You can also use a blood pressure monitor, and be sure to take your child’s temperature regularly. These three devices together will help you know the overall health and well being of your child.

Having a sick child, or worrying over one that’s very obese and must lose weight for his health, can be stressful. There are few things that can really be done to take that stress away, but even being able to ease it is helpful. When you have a way to monitor your child, the stress that you’re facing won’t be as severe, because you’ll have up-to-the-second information that will help you stay more informed and in tune with what’s going on. Just knowing what’s taking place is often one of the best ways to feel better and more in control of a situation.

While there are plenty of things in your life – and your child’s life – that you can’t control, being able to monitor important conditions is very valuable. It gives some measure of comfort, and it can help you determine whether things are stable or whether your child needs to see a doctor or go to the emergency room. Even something as simple as monitoring blood pressure, oxygen and temperature gives security that you would otherwise miss out on. It can keep you in the loop and can also help your child to feel safer and more protected because his condition is being closely monitored.

If you have school-aged children, you probably know about the standard head lice checks many schools conduct as a part of their public safety efforts. Usually, the school nurse calls in students and checks each child for signs of the parasitic insects. In times past, the nurse would call a parent to come get the child if she found any symptoms of head lice. Once parents successfully treated the lice, the school would check for nits and either accept or decline to let the student back in school.

While this was once the standard, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) encourages schools to abandon the “No-Nit Rule.” In its updated guide detailing how to treat head lice, the AAP reports that head lice shouldn’t cause medical alarm. According to the AAP, pediculus capitis don’t contribute to the spread of disease. Even though nits can be pesky, head lice shouldn’t cause a student to miss school. With no medical harm evident, it could be more detrimental for a student to miss seven to ten days of school.

The quick breeding cycle of head lice and the parasite’s ability to spread on contact can make it difficult for a school to keep head lice to a minimum. A female louse can lay up to ten eggs a day and has a life cycle of up to four weeks. The nits hatch within 10 to 14 days and can begin their own mating cycle soon after. Head lice live on human hair and feed by sucking blood from the scalp once a day. In order to get rid of head lice, the AAP recommends parents use a non-toxic formula containing at least one percent permethrin lotion. Applying the formula seven to ten days after the original application can help catch any nits just starting to hatch. Parents can find over-the-counter head lice products at reasonable prices at many grocery stores and pharmacies. In addition to applying a solution to kill lice, parents can use a head lice comb to remove any nits stuck to strands of hair.

Undoubtedly, over the course of your child’s life, you’ve had to run for over-the-counter (OTC) medication to help with common ailments ranging from severe fever to mild coughing. But are the medicines you can readily purchase in the grocery store good for your kids in the long run? Rumors have circulated that you can actually harm your kids using these medications, but the truth is that these problems lie mostly in the administered amount to the children rather than the medicine themselves. What is assumed to be a problem with the medicine, is really a matter of over-dosing.

Whenever you deliver medicine to a child, you should be sure to check the labels regarding the proper dosage. There actually are no “safe” medicines which can be taken in any quantity. Even the most popular and widely consumed OTC medication, acetaminophen, is dangerous when administered to a child in the improper dosage. When administering prescription meds, the consumer tends to take the instructions more seriously, as they understand that there is a danger associated with using the medicine incorrectly. This makes OTC medicines more likely to be accidentally overdosed due to the lack of trepidation people experience when handling them.

Another reason for the typical misuse of children’s OTC medicine is simply because the labels are not read correctly or not read at all. Parents that mistakenly deliver an adult dosage of a normally “safe” medicine, are doing much more harm than good. So when giving medicine to your child, be absolutely sure you are following the instructions carefully for both individual dosage and daily amounts. And be sure to avoid practices like giving the child enough medicine to “last through the day.” Also, if your child has a pre-existing health complication, check with your doctor before giving your child any OTC medicine.

It takes longer to get through security when you travel with kids. Security personnel have to check through things like backpacks, dolls, baby strollers, and diaper bags. To make the process easier, give yourself extra time to get to your gate. Have your children wear clothing and shoes that they can easily remove for the security check. If you’re going to a warm destination, consider having your children wear flip flops. Make sure your older children know better than to tell a joke about bombs or weapons, or you might find your entire family detained. If possible, take an FAA-approved car seat for any child weighing less than 40 pounds. This can make the ride more comfortable for them. Consider flying with an airline that offers TV or movies, or take a portable DVD player and your children’s favorite movies. To help your children handle the ear pain that is common during take off and descent, have suckers, gum, or pacifiers on hand.

Make Road Trips Fun

When you take a road trip, you have the luxury of packing more toys and distractions for your children. Portable DVD players and iPods can help keep your kids from asking the never-ending question, “Are we there yet?” You can even consider taking a laptop with a 4G connection or getting FlowTV. Older children may enjoy helping you navigate. Taking breaks every two to four hours can relief the fatigue associated with riding in the car. Find a park, a road-side attraction, or a rest area where kids can run around for at least 15 minutes. Younger children may need to stop more frequently than older kids. Having snacks on hand can reduce the number of stops you make for food but pack plenty of wet wipes to clean up sticky fingers. For safety purposes, use the proper car seats for children, and make sure everyone wears a seatbelt. If you plan to be on the road for more than one night, stop early enough for your kids to enjoy the hotel’s pool or other amenities.

Sometimes adults forget what it feels like to be a child, but learning how to handle anxiety is something every person must do. Anxiety occurs when an individual feels uneasy, or apprehensive, for no apparent reason. The situation often makes the child want to escape, but he may not know what to escape from. If you have a family history of anxiety attacks, watching your child go through this experience can trigger stress. Understanding how anxiety develops and progresses in a child can help you handle the situation in a way that benefits your child.

Children first experience anxiety at 10 to 18 months of age. Commonly referred to as separation anxiety, the child typically calms down in the presence of a parent. From the age of four to six, kids may begin to fear imaginary things, such as ghosts or monsters. As children get older, they may translate their anxiety to things that can happen in real life. Your child may experience anxiety when you leave because he might not know what to do if you were to die in a car accident. Typically, children will conquer one type of fear only to have another one rear up.

You can help children learn to overcome anxiety and fear, including phobias. Help your children realize fear is real. Talk with them about the benefits of fear: Fear of fire can help protect your child from burns by helping her be cautious. Try not to belittle the fear, but don’t let it consume your child. If you panic around a snake, you may reinforce that the animal is something to fear. For some children, you may need to help them overcome their panic by slowly introducing them to the object of their fear. If your child experiences anxiety while you’re gone, start by distancing yourself a little bit. When your child calms down, move a little further away. For older kids, you can teach them positive affirmations to help them, such as saying, “I can do this.” With your help, your child can conquer his panic.

But kidney stones can form at any age, and some U.S. hospitals are treating more kids for the condition than in years past. Kidney stones are the result of crystal-forming substances occurring in high quantities in the urine. Typically, the substances are calcium, oxalate, or uric acid. At the higher quantities, the liquid of the urine fails to dissolve the substance, leading to the formation of a kidney stone.

A recent study of data from pediatric hospitals in the U.S. indicated an increase from 125 cases of children with kidney stones in 1999 to over 1,300 in 2008. Doctors who reviewed the data were reluctant to say the upswing is a trend. The information corresponds to children seen at hospitals; therefore, it may not be a true representation of the average U.S. population. The increase could be the result of pediatric clinics designated for kidney stones. Doctors may refer more patients to these clinics than they would have prior to them opening.

Some researchers believe there may be a connection between the increase in childhood obesity and the increase in children developing kidney stones. As research continues into the obesity epidemic that has gained national attention in part because of First Lady Obama’s “Let’s Move” campaign, the connection may become more apparent. As with obesity, children’s diet may be a contributing factor. Dr. Jonathan C. Routh, a practitioner at Boston’s Children’s Hospital explained that an increase in sodium intake, eating more animal fat, and not getting enough fluids can increase the risk of kidney stones. Children who have a family history of the condition may see an elevated risk, as well. To prevent kidney stones, parents can make sure their kids drink plenty of water, especially after exercising or during warmer weather. Keep in mind children who have had one kidney stone have an increased risk of developing additional ones later in life. Passing a kidney stone can be very painful. If you think your child might have one, call your doctor as soon as possible.

Students walking into cafeterias across Denver may see a surprise when they return to school. Instead of mushy veggies and bread-battered chicken nuggets, students will have the choice of fresh-cut fruit and healthy entrees, including salads hold the wilted lettuce. Not only will the food have better nutritious value, Denver has brought in professional chefs to train cafeteria workers so the food will look appealing. Mixing a rainbow of colors into fun-looking treats will hopefully encourage kids to eat a serving of fruit with each meal. To match the gourmet makeover, 600 cafeteria staff members turned in aprons and hair nets for chef gear, including hats and coats.

While the school district is optimistic about the change, some workers are skeptical about whether the effort will increase the number of students choosing to eat cafeteria food. For many people, cafeteria food carries a negative connotation. School lunches became a topic of debate as a probable cause for the increase in childhood obesity affecting kids, but one worker points to the number of sack lunches she sees on a regular basis. The “homemade” lunches contain processed foods like Lunchables and chips. It’s also common to see desserts and pop. Few sack lunches have actual fruit in them.

With the new makeover, the school district hopes to convert some of the students from bringing their lunch to getting a more nutritional meal through the school. According to some cafeteria cooks, the new menus will take longer to prepare but will be closer to what they would make at home for their own families. While workers and the school district didn’t reveal how the makeover will affect the cost of lunch on a daily basis, some parents are excited about the change. One parent said, “I pay more for organic food, so why wouldn’t I pay more for a better meal for my child?” Another parent hopes the change will save him time. He said, “If the schools prepare better food, I won’t have to pack my son’s lunch every morning.” If the transition goes well, other school districts may follow suit.

As summer rolls to an end, parents should think about getting kids ready to go back to school. This may include getting immunizations and vaccines according to state regulations. Exactly what you need varies depending on the state where you live and the risks for certain diseases. If you don’t know what shots your child needs, talk with your school district or pediatrician. Most doctors stay abreast of the requirements in order to provide the best care. You’ll want to consider whether to get shots that schools recommend but don’t require. If you have a teenage daughter, you may want to look into the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine, which helps prevent cervical cancer. Like many vaccines, controversy surrounds this one. The HPV vaccine helps protect against conditions caused by sexually transmitted diseases. Some parents think it’s better to teach children abstinence than rely on a vaccine.

While most pediatricians recommend vaccinations, there are some medical professionals who believe children no longer need them. Officials in areas that have experienced recent outbreaks of illnesses, like whooping cough and chicken pox, disagree. The Health Department in Washington is keeping tabs on outbreaks occurring in Canada and warning parents to take preventive measures. If you can’t afford to pay out-of-pocket for shots, check with your practitioner. Many states have programs to cover the expense. You’ll have to pay a portion of the bill, but it’ll cost less than paying full price. Many insurance companies cover shots as part of the standard coverage for children under 19. Health Department officials also remind people that some illnesses have no cure but are preventable with vaccines and immunizations.

If you don’t want to get your children immunized or vaccinated, check with your childcare provider or your school district to determine what you need to do to satisfy the health requirements. In some cases, an alternative medical practitioner, like a chiropractor, can write you a note exempting your child. If you decide to opt out of immunization, your child may be more susceptible to illness, especially if she’s around kids who have just gotten shots.

In 1998, tobacco companies reached a settlement with the U.S. government prohibiting the use of cigarette ads targeted toward children to market their products. The original debate called into question R.J. Reynolds use of Joe Camel, a carton character, to promote smoking, as well as other popular ads. In 2005, tobacco companies began selling candy-flavored cigarettes with fun names like “Kauai Kolada.” Supporters of the government’s restriction on tobacco advertisements were quick to jump on what they deemed a violation of the settlement. While the settlement prohibits using anything that targets kids, it may not be enough.

An article published in the August 2010 issue of Pediatrics shows a connection between exposure to general cigarette advertisements and an increase in smoking among teenagers. The article examined data from a study that followed 1,681 children between the ages of 11 and 14. Participants started the study as non-smokers. Through the duration of the study, researchers documented the frequency of visits participants made to stores with a higher quantity of cigarette displays and ads. Many of these stores were gas stations, liquor stores, or convenience stores. By the end of the study, 18 percent of participants had begun smoking. Participants who visited stores with more tobacco advertisements at least twice a week were more likely to start smoking than those who visited such stores less frequently.

The study raises questions as to whether the 1998 settlement has gone far enough to protect children from the health risks associated with smoking. Many of the stores visited during the study had locations close to schools. While the ads didn’t feature cartoon characters or anything aimed at teenagers, some believe exposure to multiple ads is enough of a risk. The initial study may spark additional research to determine whether the government needs to look at restricting how close to a school a tobacco advertisement might be.

Each year, Food Management magazine awards noncommercial foodservice providers for exceptional accomplishments or innovation in the industry. The competition considers a variety of areas within foodservice, such as planning for special events, wellness initiatives, convenience retailing, facility design, and new menu items. In 2010, the editorial staff at the magazine evaluated more than 150 entries according to predetermined criteria for the competition. Judges looked at the impact of the achievement, evaluated the effectiveness of it, considered its impact on other organizations or areas, and examined the innovation in comparison to standard practices. After judging the entries, the magazine award Texas Children’s Hospital with the 2010 Best Concept award for the hospital’s Beanie Club program.

The Beanie Club program helps staff members at the hospital teach patients about food nutrition and its relation to health. As part of its initiative, the program helps families and patients pick more nutritious items from the menu through a reward program. When families purchase seven Beanie Club selections from the menu, the hospital rewards their healthy decisions with a free meal. To advertise the program, the hospital designed a green bean mascot, featured on promotional materials throughout the facility. The judges felt the program was, “especially appropriate in a juvenile acute care setting.” The magazine recognized the hospital for offering better choices for patients who often have to stay at the hospital for long periods of time due to serious childhood health issues.

The latest award only helps to confirm Texas Children’s Hospital as the exceptional facility that it is. The nationally recognized hospital is one of the top 10 facilities for children’s medical needs, according to U.S. News and World Report. It offers one of the largest pediatric care networks in the nation and has branches throughout the Houston area. In 2010, the hospital embarked on a $1.5 billion project, called Vision 2010, through which the hospital will add a neurological research institute, a suburban-based hospital, and a high-risk-birth obstetrics facility.

When a hospital announces it’s moving to a new location or opening a new facility, most people view the change as something positive. But if you have a due date around the scheduled transition, you could walk into trouble. When a hospital changes facilities, there are several things that can go wrong. Nurses may have to sign into the new operating system and receive clearance before they can administer medications. This can result in patients not receiving medication on time.

Employees may not know where the new storage areas are for supplies, leading to delays in care. One woman who delivered at a new hospital had to have her family bring towels from home because nurses couldn’t locate the linens. Doctors may not have basic equipment at the new location. A patient who happened to be the first person to have a c-section in a new facility helped the doctors make a list of everything missing from the room (during her c-section), including a clock to time the birth and and special lights.

If you’ll be giving birth at a new facility, here are some tips:

~ Talk with your doctor about your time frame. The first 48 hours are the toughest ones because that’s when the staff’s discovering issues.

~ Pack extra supplies, including toiletries and towels, in case the nurses can’t find supplies.

~ Ask your doctor to walk through the rooms she’ll be using during your delivery to determine whether items are missing before your scheduled due date. This is a good time to make sure she has anything she might need during an emergency and to learn the layout of the facility.

~ Prepare yourself to be flexible. Transitioning to a new facility can be stressful for patients and staff, and there may be something beyond your doctor’s or the nurses control. Do your best to stay calm. When possible, have a family member of friend with you who can go talk to nurses, find your doctor, or track down the food you ordered an hour ago while you’re stuck in bed.

Illness is hard on a family, especially when the person suffering is a child. When you’re under stress form an illness, you don’t need to add any more by worrying about the hospital where your child gets treatment. Working with a top-ranked facility can help alleviate the stress, and you’ll have peace of mind knowing your child is getting the best care possible.

Each year, U.S. News surveys pediatric centers across the United States. Thousands of doctors responded to the survey and indicated where they would send the sickest children depending on illness. Special areas of care included cancer, kidney, neonatology, gastroenterology, orthopedics, pulmonology, diabetes and endocrinology, heart and heart surgery, urology, and neurology and neurosurgery.

Overall, 62 of the 170 children’s health facilities surveyed ranked in the top 10 for at least one category, but eight hospitals ranked in the top 10 for each category. These eight hospitals are Children’s Hospital Boston, Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC, St. Louis Children’s Hospital-Washington University, Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, New York-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley-Komansky Children’s Hospital, and Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia.

While any top-ten ranked children’s hospital is sure to give you the best care possible, you may want to consider treatment options at one of the top three facilities for the specific illness your child has. These hospitals are on the cutting edge of research and have the latest treatment options, including experimental ones. From the list of the top-ranked facilities, the following hospitals hold the top three spots for at least four of the 10 categories.

Children’s Hospital Boston ranks first for heart and heart surgery, kidney disorders, neurology and neurosurgery, orthopedics, and urology; second for diabetes and endocrinology and neonatology; and third for cancer, gastroenterology, and pulmonology.

Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia ranks first for diabetes and endocrinology, neonatology, and pulmonology; second for urology, cancer, gastroenterology, and heart and heart surgery; and third for neurology and neurosurgery and orthopedics.

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center ranks first for gastroenterology, second for pulmonology, and third for kidney disorders and neonatology.

Many new mothers receive information on the benefits of breastfeeding, which can include a reduction in the development of allergies, better emotional development later in life, and less illness due to antibodies in breast milk. For some mothers, breastfeeding is a natural choice. It cuts down on the expense of having a newborn because families won’t have to buy formula. For many mothers, nursing is a bonding experience. But what happens when nursing isn’t second nature?

Having a baby latch on incorrectly can be painful. It can cause the mother’s tissue to crack, causing further pain anytime the baby tries t eat. For some mother’s, the idea of feeding a baby through the breast can be difficult to reconcile. Even though thousands of mothers agree there is no sexual connotation in nursing, the idea can be difficult to get past. So what’s a new mother to do?

Meeting with a breastfeeding consultant can help eliminate some of the problems and hang-ups you might have about nursing. A breastfeeding consult on staff at a hospital was able to show a new mother ways to get the baby to attach correctly, reducing the pain involved in nursing. Some new moms need to know how to hold the baby properly during feeding times in order to prevent issues caused by uneven suction. Consultants can also help a new mother get past the weirdness of using their breasts as feeding instruments.

With all the talk about the bond between a mother and a child that breastfeeding can create, dads and other family members may feel left out of the experience. A nursing consultant can give your family tips so you can include anyone who wants to bond in the process. One common suggestion is to pump breast milk into a bottle and allow family members to feed the baby at bottle time. This might not work for all women, but a breastfeeding consultant can help with that too.

According to Steve Field, who represents 42,000 primary care physicians as the chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners, parental influence can be the determining factor in whether a child will grow up to be a healthy adult. Field recently wrote a letter to the Sunday Observer to bring the issue to the media. In it, he blames parents who smoke in front of their children and those who feed their children junk food for committing a type of child abuse. This belief stems from research showing a connection between these habits and the development of illnesses in children exposed to the behavior.

By modeling the behavior, parents may increase the risk of an entire generation developing health issues like diabetes and heart disease. In some cases, it may lead to premature death. When general practitioners tell a patient he needs to lose weight, the patient will often ignore the warning. It’s the same for a doctor who tells a woman to quit smoking. Many patients view general practitioners as spoil sports. Field points to hard evidence backing the warning as the reason for it. He hopes the connection between a parent’s behavior and its affect on the children’s health will inspire parents to take responsibility for their vices.

For some, changing behavior may require additional help and expense. People who have smoked their entire lives may need long-term support to kick the habit. Individuals suffering from obesity may need to work with a nutritionist to learn how to eat correctly and when to eat. If the parent doesn’t understand how to eat with nutrition in mind, how can she teach her child how to eat a balance diet?

While every visit to the doctor is a chance for a practitioner to catch early warning signs, Field believes the future of child health may depend on parents improving their lifestyles and making healthier choices.

A recent study published in Nutrition and Dietetics examined children before and after the study to determine the impact of three activities on childhood eating habits. At the end of the study, researchers with Bangkok’s Mahidol University saw children doubling the amount of vegetables they were eating at meals. The variety of vegetables also increased, with children picking four types of vegetables at a meal rather than two kinds. Parents involved in the study reported an increase in the amount of conversation centered around vegetables, and some parents said their children were proud to report the vegetables they had eaten at lunch.

Here are three things you can do to get your kids to eat more veggies.

1. Model good behavior for children. During the study, children watched Popeye cartoons, featuring a sailor who gets buff by eating spinach. Students also ate lunch with teachers who picked nutritious meals, including the recommended number of vegetables. Researchers asked parents to get involved and to model healthy eating habits at home, as well.

2. Get kids involved with growing and cooking vegetables. Over the eight-week study, 26 kindergartners helped plant vegetable seeds. They also helped prepare meals like vegetable soup. At home, kids can be junior cooks. Let them help with measuring and pouring. Older kids can even assist with chopping and peeling vegetables as long as an adult is there to supervise.

3. Expose children to a variety of vegetables. During the study, researchers hosted tasting parties. This is something you can do at home, too. Incorporate a new vegetable or use choices your children already like in a new way. This can be as simple as cutting a cucumber into a fun shape and serving it with a new dip. You can have kids pick less common vegetables, like okra, and try it cooked in different ways.

By combining multimedia, positive role models, and personal connection with vegetables, parents can promote healthy food choices that will last a child’s lifetime.

Despite constant warnings, leaving a child in a car has led to 29 deaths in 2010 as of August, according to the Department of Geosciences at San Francisco State University. As summer continues, several organizations, including Safe Kids USA, the Oklahoma Health Department, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, want parents to understand that even cooler temperatures in the 60-degree range can cause a child’s body to overheat, resulting in death.

While most parents know the dangers of leaving children in cars, the most common reason for this type of death results when a caregiver forgets the child is in the car. This can happen when your usual routine changes. One woman stopped to pick up donuts and went to work. She thought she’d dropped her child off at daycare, but she hadn’t.

~ Always double check the back seat of your car. Even if you aren’t responsible for the children, getting into this habit can help prevent unforeseen disaster when you are in charge.

~ Set up reminders when your schedule changes. You can have a spouse or friend call to remind you of the change, which can help focus it in your mind. If your spouse is responsible for the kids, take the initiative to call him or her as a reminder.

~ Put items you need for the day in the back seat of the car. This can force you to look at the back seat.

~ Unload your children first. It’s easy to unload the trunk and think you’ve gotten everything, but in reality your child may be in the car still. Unloading your child first helps prevent this type of mistake.

In addition to doing everything possible to make sure you don’t leave a child in the car, you need to take a few other precautions to prevent car- and heat-related deaths. Make sure you lock the car doors and close the trunk. Over 1/3 of deaths occurred when children were trapped in a car where they were playing. Keep your car keys out of reach and don’t let children use them as toys.

The Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices issues a directive on August 5, 2010, warning U.S. doctors to avoid using the CSL vaccine for children under the age of eight. After receiving shots of the CSL flu vaccine, young children who live in Australia and New Zealand experienced convulsions and fevers.

CSL Biotherapies is an Australian-based company that is manufacturing a portion of the flu vaccines headed to the U.S. for the fall. The remaining vaccines will come from four additional manufactures and have had no negative side effects as of yet. Overall, the U.S. anticipates receiving 170 million doses of the vaccine from the combined group of manufacturers.

While health professionals have not reported any deaths in association with the CSL vaccine, members on the panel for the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices expressed concern over the negative side effects. According to the vaccine information, children under the age of five experienced almost 10 times more problems with the vaccine than with other ones. Regardless of the warning, the majority of panel members believed it would be better for doctors to adminster the CSL vaccine in children at risk of flu complications rather than skipping the shot because other vaccine brands weren’t available.

As a result of the warning, many expect the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to issue a formal warning to doctors and the public regarding the CSL vaccine. The CDC usually adopts recommendations made by the panel.

Professionals looking into the negative side effects related to the CSL vaccine have yet to determine a cause for the fevers or convulsions. However, Sharon McHale, a representative for CSL Biotherapies, said the company was cooperating with the U.S. committee. The company had already decided not to distribute one form of its vaccine and supports taking precautions with the vaccine it will send to the U.S.

When a person, even a child, doesn’t feel well for a long period of time, the illness can begin to affect mood. It’s even possible for conditions like obesity and diabetes to cause depression, which can suck the fun out of life. While most kids have moments of sadness or may seem moody, these moments should not last for an extended amount of time. According to research, three out of 100 young children may suffer from depression. The number increases to nine for those in the teenage years.

Children with depression may not exhibit the same symptoms of depression that an adult would, so it’s important to know what to look for. Symptoms of depression may include being grumpy or bored. Kids struggling with the condition may no long enjoy activities they used to do on a regular basis for fun. The depression may affect sleep patterns, weight, and the ability to concentrate. Some children may struggle with feelings of worthlessness and consider suicide.

If you think your child may suffer from depression, evaluate his level of activity. Young children may withdraw from social activities or feel tired all the time. School-aged kids may complain of stomachaches or headaches. It can also help to understand whether your child may be at a higher risk for developing depression, which may indicate a chemical imbalance. Stressful situations often contribute to the condition. Medications used for pain relief may interact with the body’s ability to regulate neurotransmitters. If you have a family history of depression, heredity may play a role, as well.

To determine whether a symptom is the result of depression, have your child visit your family doctor. It is possible for certain illnesses or disorders to mimic depression. If it is depression, your doctor can work with you to determine the best treatment option. Some children may respond to counseling, while others may need medication. At home, you can encourage your son or daughter to engage in exercise and prepare meals with a balanced diet in mind. Also, take the time to listen to your child.

If your child has trouble concentrating at school, seems to be hyperactive, or struggles to learn, she may not be getting enough sleep. According to Dr. Brian McGinley, who works with Johns Hopkins Children’s Center as an assistant pulmonary medicine professor, failing to get adequate sleep may compromise a child’s immune system and increase the risk of developing dangerous conditions like cardiovascular disease. To help parents understand the amount of sleep children need, McGinley and colleagues at the Pediatric Sleep Disorder Clinic have issued guidelines.

Children 1 to 8 weeks old need more sleep than older children, but the sleep is broken into smaller sessions. As parents know, newborns often wake at set intervals through the night. Overall, newborns should sleep a minimum of 10.5 hours each day, with the normal range reaching up to 18 hours. From three to twelve months, children begin to develop a circadian cycle and will start sleeping more at night and be more active during the day. By nine months, 80 percent of infants will sleep through the night. The range for this group is nine to twelve hours a night. Children may take thirty-minute naps throughout the day with some children napping up to four times.

From one to four, children need 12 to 14 hours of sleep at night. The increase at night may stem from the reduction in naps. Most toddlers won’t nap more than twice a day. By age seven, most U.S. children will no longer nap. Kids from five to twelve years of age need an average of 10 to 11 hours of sleep. While it can be tough to enforce, older children (from 13 to 18) need a minimum of 8.5 hours of sleep with a range up to 9.5 hours.

When a person gets the right amount of sleep, he will fall asleep and wake-up spontaneously. In the morning, he’ll feel refreshed rather than tired. To determine the correct amount of sleep, parents may want to find out how long their children sleep during the summer, when they don’t have to be up early for school.

In August 2010, a research team led by Dr. Frank Biro, who works with the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, published the results of a study for breast development in American girls. According to the information collected, girls are developing breasts as early as age seven or eight. The study showed more girls are starting puberty early than in a similar study conducted 10 and 30 years ago. The largest variance from previous studies occurred in young girls with Caucasian background. There could be several factors causing the early development, including environmental stimulants and genes, but the study didn’t pinpoint a predominant reason.

The Environment Research Center and the Breast Cancer Center recruited 1,239 girls between six and eight years of age for the study, which began in 2003. Participants lived in three areas: New York’s East Harlem, the San Francisco Bay area, and the greater metropolitan area of Cincinnati. To analyze breast development, participants compared their development to the Tanner Breast Stages, comprising five stages. Researchers also interviewed the primary care givers for participants. The examinations showed the following statistics for seven-year-old participants: 23.4 percent of black, non-Hispanic girls; 14.9 percent of Hispanic girls; and 10.4 percent of white girls reached stage two. At age eight, the percentages increased across the board. Overall, girls who were obese reached stage two earlier.

While the researchers believe the results are not a direct representation of the general public, there is the possibility of the data showing a trend. This concerns doctors because research has found a connection between the development of breast cancer and starting to menstruate at an earlier age. Another concern is early development may lead to promiscuous behavior before girls are mentally ready to handle the risk involved with it.

Due to the connection between obesity and early development, parents may want to strive to incorporate a healthy and balance diet. If girls maintain a proper weight, it may prevent early development. The research team plans to do additional investigation to determine whether this is a national trend, and it will also continue to look for possible causes.

Since 1990, the number of children diagnosed with food allergies has dramatically increased. Now, doctors estimate eight percent of children have some type of allergy to foods. Because of the sharp increase, watchdog organizations doubt whether children are receiving the correct diagnosis. At the heart of the debate is self-diagnosis testing kits, but some critics are extending their doubt to practitioners who use testing methods like skin prick tests. The watchdog group NICE, or the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, claims 1/5 of self-diagnoses tests return inaccurate results.

Testing for food allergies isn’t the only indication food allergies are on the rise. Hospitals in Northern Ireland, Wales, and England are reporting a 500 percent increase over the last 20 years in the number of children admitted because of an allergic reaction to food.

To help ensure doctors get the correct diagnosis, NICE has put together guidelines to determine whether a child has a food allergy. In some cases, patients may need additional testing to confirm whether a condition or symptom is the result of a true allergy. According to the watchdog group, improper use of the word allergy may contribute to an incorrect diagnosis.

The guidelines call for general practitioners to test any child with a severe reaction, such as anaphylaxis. As part of testing, parents should remove a suspected food from the diet for a period of time and then reintroduce it. If the child is in allergic, he will have another reaction once he tries to reintegrate the food.

Typical food allergies for children include shellfish, eggs, nuts, cow’s milk, gluten, and kiwi. Some doctors think the statistics for food allergies in children are lower than the actual amount because parents may miss the symptoms of the allergy. As doctors find new ways to determine whether a child has an allergy, the numbers may continue to increase.
